Note: Many of my clients are scholars, historians and genealogists seeking specific information related to their research. For their convenience I include the following details directly from this book. LIFE, ADVENTURES AND TRAVELS IN CALIFORNIA a. FARNHAMS PICTORIAL TRAVELS IN CALIFORNIA AND OREGON, To Which Are Added the Conquest of California, Travels in Oregon, and the History of the Gold Regions. Published in 1849 by Nafis & Cornish, New York. 9 x 6 red cloth hardcover highly decorated with gilt. Condition: GOOD ANTIQUE CONDITION. This rare antique book has been expertly restored by a professional book conservator. Rebacked with new cloth spine, original spine cloth and decoration laid over. New endpapers, hinges repaired, binding reinforced. The binding is firm. Some foxing, some age blemishes, tidemarks along the outer edge of the pages, not very noticeable after first 50 pages or so. Overall a good surviving example of this very rare 1849 early California guide and record of the great gold rush years. This the very rare and highly collectible 1849 pictorial edition of Thomas J. Farnhams LIFE, ADVENTURES AND TRAVELS IN CALIFORNIA, a richly illustrated portrait of the Golden State as it existed at the time of the great American Gold Rush of 1849. This beautiful volume features the publishers original red extra gilt cloth with elaborate gilt-stamped designs of pictorial vignettes within ornate floral surrounds and rule borders, and spine with scrolling ornaments (professionally rebacked, original spine preserved). Inside, its adorned with 53 full-page woodcut text illustrations, including frontispiece and pictorial title within ornamental border of military and patriotic symbols. The 1840s were a tumultuous period in California history, as repercussions from the Mexican War and the discovery of gold rumbled across the nation. An earlier version of this book called Travels in California was published in 1844 but was updated by the author in this edition to include the exciting news of the discovery of gold in California, along with the addition of numerous illustrated scenes. LIFE, ADVENTURES AND TRAVELS IN CALIFORNIA is a vivid portrait of the Golden State, describing its seemingly boundless riches and resources, from its fertile valleys and sunny climates, to its mineral-rich hills, dazzling scenery, teeming wildlife and its indigenous native American populations. The author, an explorer and adventurer, personally visited all of the places he describes, many of which were still under Mexican governance at the time. Farnham saw in California a verdant land that was ripe for the plucking, a land waiting to be developed by the latest generation of ambitious, industrious Americans. His words on the beauty and prospects of California resonate with awe. California is an incomparable wilderness. This is a wilderness of groves and lawns, broken by deep and rich ravines, separated from each other by broad and wild wastes. Along the ocean is a world of vegetable beauty; on the sides of the mountains are the mightiest trees of the earth; on the heights are the eternal snows, lighted by volcanic fires. In LIFE, ADVENTURES AND TRAVELS IN CALIFORNIA, Farnham presents a superb synopsis of Californias geography, climate, cattle, crops, missions, presidios, harbors, and Indians. This work preserves for all time an invaluable glimpse of early California life, economy, amusements, and government. Farnhams work includes specific descriptions of many early California locales Monterey, Los Angeles, San Francisco, and many more. The book also contains an advisory chapter expressly devoted to aiding travelers in their emigration to California. Remember, in those days, the only transcontinental route was by the Overland Trail, a treacherous and unreliable journey of months in a covered wagon. For people in a hurry to get to California and cash in on the gold rush, travel by sea was the preferred route. The chapter, called Gregorys Guide For California Travellers, Via the Isthmus of Panama, strongly urges all California emigrants to come by way of the Isthmus of Panama. It tells them what to expect, how to conduct themselves, how to dress, how to maintain ones health during the journey, etc. LIFE, ADVENTURES AND TRAVELS IN CALIFORNIA was wildly popular in its day. Suddenly the public was gripped by an insatiable hunger for everything California. Ironically, despite the books popularity, few copies survive today. To give you a better idea of the gold mine of information awaiting you in the pages of this rare antique book, I have furnished some helpful details below, starting with a thorough accounting of the books contents. Further down the page, you will find a generous sampling of the numerous illustrations in the book. I hope you will take a moment to have a look.
